Veteran translator's retrospect: Life and work

Editor's note: Gao Mang (original family name Song) was born in Harbin, northeast China's Heilongjiang Province in 1926, and has spent a lifetime as a translator, editor, and Soviet literature researcher. Once using "Wulanhan" as his pen name, Gao has worked for various Sino-Soviet friendship associations and institutes of foreign literature studies and has been a long-time promoter of Russian and Soviet literature in China.
Gao, 90, shared with us his working and life experiences in his home on Nov. 16, 2016.

| During his childhood, Gao lived in Harbin, a city then ruled by a Japanese puppet regime. From 1933 to 1943, he attended the school attached to the Harbin Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) that had been founded by Americans, but later taken over by Russians. He learned Russian because his classmates used it as their common language. Gao started to publish in 1943. In 1947, he translated Pavel Korchagin, a play adapted from Nikolai Ostrovsky's masterpiece How the Steel Was Tempered. The play soon became very popular and was staged in cities all over China.
